A wonderfully textured book by the prize-winning author Niki Marangou
This wonderfully textured book by the prize-winning author Niki Marangou is set in the turbulent world of pre-World War II Europe and Egypt.
In the 1920s, a young man from the sleepy town of Famagusta, Cyprus, sets off to study medicine in Vienna. Dazzled by the European way of life, as well as its music and science, George falls in love with an older Jewish woman as he bears witness to the rise of fascism.
George returns to Cyprus in 1940. A beautiful Greek woman named Kate becomes his assistant at work, and he is charmed by her. He does not want to get attached, however, so he sends her off to Alexandria, Egypt, where she lives through the "golden years" of the Greek community in Alexandria during the reign of King Farouk.
"In Niki Marangou's world," writes critic Alexis Zeras, "Eastern listlessness coexists with sensuality and the brilliant intellectuality of Western tradition."
From Famagusta to Vienna has been translated into German, Rumanian, Bulgarian, Arabic and a Turkish translation is also due.
Niki Marangou wrote this novel inspired by the story of her parents. "I had a lot of material, letters, etc., after they died and I thought of writing their story." She was fascinated by historical places.
Recently and with untold sorrow we said our last goodbye to Niki Marangou, who was not only an active and creative member of the Board of the Cyprus Pen Center, always keen to effectively carry out her responsibilities, but also a significant female personality of Cyprus, an author, a poet and an...

The story of the young doctor who starts from Cyprus to finish up in Vienna at the time of the second world war is described in a very fine and passionate way. The struggle to adapt to a changing world and the amorous affair of the doctor with a jewish lady dominates in a dramatic way the first part of the book while the love story of Giorgos, the name of the `hero', to Kate tranfers us into the Alexandria of Farouk with the cosmopolitan glamour of the age and finishes up in a happy ending in Limassol, Cyprus at a time where the middle class was enjoying the `fruits' of the English colonial time. A very readable and enjoyable book which revives in a magical way the times and places it describes. - Amazon Reader Review by Andreas Karayan "Filmfan" (Nicosia ,CYPRUS).
